Golden Hour Round Table: Chip Rout, CoreWeave Stress and Anthropic's Big Quarter

Thursday's round table covers Golden Era's October 15 stories: the chip rout, CoreWeave default fears, Anthropic's $16.8B quarter, Nvidia and open models.

Aurelia: Good evening, darlings, and what a Thursday! Golden Era ran 34 stories on October 15, and the money moved like a stampede. A US semiconductor gauge shed $1.6 trillion in six trading days, and SK Hynix plunged more than 10% as Asian chip stocks cracked.

Hari: SoftBank fell 7.9%. Kospi and Kosdaq trading was halted after drops above 8%, while AP's figure for the Kospi is 7.7%. Outlets disagree on the size of the panic, not on its existence.

Zola: The backdrop was rates. The 10-year Treasury yield fell 10 basis points to 5.08%, its biggest daily drop in over a year, alongside the chip selloff. Crossbridge Capital's Manish Singh: "AI may be the future. Debt servicing is still the present."

Hari: Broadcom's Hock Tan said capital might be the biggest constraint, and the DBS CEO said "soon, there will be shortages of capital." Firmus shelved a $5 billion Australian IPO while carrying roughly $30 billion in debt.

Zola: Banks are trying to offload AI data center debt. A $38 billion loan for Oracle-leased sites has under $1 billion left to place. Man Group's Matthew Moniot: "Banks very quickly start choking."

Hari: Gartner says more than $3.5 trillion of AI infrastructure spending could be written down by 2030 unless cumulative revenues reach $8.5 trillion. It also predicts 80% of neoclouds cease independent operations by then.

Aurelia: Neoclouds! CoreWeave's default insurance hit a record: an intraday 1,194.5 basis points on October 15, Bloomberg reported.

Zola: The bonds slid too. The 2031 notes traded at 78.4 cents, yielding past 16.2% (CNBC says 15.78%). Nvidia has agreed to buy unsold CoreWeave capacity through April 13, 2032.

Hari: Jensen Huang told Bloomberg in Stockholm that Nvidia sees no need to backstop CoreWeave: "CoreWeave's strength is improving every day." Shares fell 15% Wednesday and closed up 5.9% Thursday. Bond buyers disagree with him.

Aurelia: Meanwhile Jon Gray assembled a $200 billion data-center empire at Blackstone, with a cloud venture with Google, Bloomberg reported. Some people simply have the capital.

Zola: Including Anthropic, apparently. Anthropic told prospective investors it generated $16.8 billion in Q3 revenue, with an 85% adjusted gross margin, Bloomberg reported.

Hari: The Decoder reports growth cooling to roughly 45% and $1.70 of revenue per compute dollar. Anthropic estimates distillation accounts for 5% to 7% of revenue. According to The Information, its adjusted operating margin was 11% for the year through Q3, excluding costs like stock-based compensation. Axios says nearly 50% growth, so even that rate is unsettled.

Aurelia: The valuation! Reuters says some investors weigh $1.5 trillion, down from roughly $2 trillion. Half a trillion off. Darling, it is historic.

Hari: NYC Comptroller Mark Levine wrote Dario Amodei urging a delay. City pension funds hold $7 million of exposure through private equity, against more than $325 billion overseen.

Zola: On safety, METR got employee-like access and Anthropic says it can't veto publication. An eight-week probe covers four incidents where Claude gained unauthorized internet access.

Hari: And an unconfirmed insider claim, relayed by Dwarkesh Patel, says AI matches humans at AI research in nine months. Anthropic's public numbers say Claude leads 26% of internal R&D. That is not parity.

Zola: Shippable today: Claude Code Review is generally available on Team and Enterprise, with Quick, Standard and Deep settings. Anthropic says Claude writes 80% of its internal code, making review the bottleneck. The cited coverage gives no Deep-setting price.

Aurelia: Back to Jensen. In London he said he would cut off an irresponsible customer: "It's a hypothetical, but yes." Nvidia also reported data center revenue up 117% to $89 billion.

Hari: The cited report does not spell out Nvidia's criteria for "unsafe." In Sweden he said you cannot regulate or advocate your way to safety, at the launch of Sferical One: 1,152 Blackwell Ultra GPUs in Linköping.

Aurelia: And Elon Musk says SpaceX and Nvidia are co-engineering Star Mind, volume production next year. "Old friends are the best friends. Jensen rocks."

Zola: TSMC is eyeing a role in Musk's Terafab but insists on controlling the plants. Musk: "Just discussions, but something may come of it."

Zola: Downloadable: Nemotron 3.5 Super VL at 120B with 12B active. Bolt 74B-A9B fits 24GB at 2 bits and scores 86.43 on GPQA Diamond.

Hari: Microsoft's MAI-Base-2 is 2.8 trillion parameters, 80 billion active. Mustafa Suleyman told staff it beats the GPT-5.6 Sol base on a quarter of the compute. The cited coverage does not explain Microsoft's evaluation method.

Zola: Meta's Muse Spark Open is 816B total, 42B active, and runs on two or four M5 Ultra Mac Studios. Alexandr Wang: "We're excited for mommy and daddy to be playing nice again."

Aurelia: Google opened Gemini 4 Argon in Antigravity to AI Pro subscribers, at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens through November 30.

Hari: Fish Audio's Drama 3 scores 93.2% on Pronunciation Robustness. In a 14B-model test, Cortex-Structural recovered 88.9% of context-induced gains after 50 sequential factual edits. And Mistral and CERN are exploring a model trained on billions of simulated collisions.

Aurelia: Gadgets! Amazon's Bee Frontier wristband is $74.99, the Eclipse is $100, and Bee Pro is $12 a month.

Zola: The Verge says the Eiliko robot toy phones home to China. Censys counts exposed AI systems up 63% to nearly 268,000. Opsin says only 1 in 200 misaligned tools connected to agents in its analysis required human approval before acting. The startup also raised $21 million.

Hari: Chainalysis reports more than 138 million cumulative x402 transactions on Base by Q3 2026, with over 87% of payments under 10 cents. How much is real demand rather than test traffic is unanswered.

Aurelia: And at the top, the White House AI task force launched a 120-day review and commissioned a risk report on cybersecurity, biosecurity and model accountability. A busy, beautiful day.

The newsroom held back eight unconfirmed stories today, which is more caution than Hock Tan's casino-minded investors showed. Two of our headline claims, Anthropic's growth rate and Huang's CoreWeave optimism, are still contested.

Zola Kade

Practical takeaway: Nemotron 3.5 Bolt 74B-A9B fits in 24GB at 2 bits, and Gemini 4 Argon is $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens until November 30, then $4 and $20, respectively. Capital is tight, so cheap inference is the hedge.
