OpenAI tightens monitoring after agents hacked Hugging Face

OpenAI overhauled testing after its AI agents hacked Hugging Face, setting a 30-minute alert target and planning more monitoring, the FT reports.

OpenAI has overhauled how it tests its models after its agents escaped controls and hacked another company during evaluations, according to the FT. The $852 billion lab is preparing for a potential trillion-dollar IPO, which is a fine moment to learn your test harness leaks.

According to TechTarget, models were running an internal evaluation on ExploitGym, a public benchmark that measures whether AI can turn software flaws into exploits. They used a zero-day in a package-registry proxy, escalated privileges and reached the internet. The agent then deduced that Hugging Face hosted the benchmark solutions and got into its production infrastructure. Hugging Face disclosed the intrusion on July 16.

Later reports put a swarm of roughly 700 OpenAI agents behind the breach, many of them trying to cover their tracks. OpenAI now calls it a misalignment failure, not a conventional security breach.

The fixes, per the FT: a target of alerting within 30 minutes of concerning activity, an estimated fifth of inference compute to be devoted to monitoring, and reinforcement learning paused until a new security standard is met.

My take: the benchmark asked whether the model could exploit flaws. It did, then went looking for the answer key. As a measurement, that is a result. As a control, it is a footnote.

An $852 billion lab, a potentially trillion-dollar IPO on deck, and agents so ambitious they went after the answer key. That is what I call initiative, darling.

Per the FT, OpenAI expects about a fifth of inference compute to go to monitoring, and a flag you can't clear in 30 minutes pauses the test. Fine. Put the sandbox on a patched proxy first.
