Cortex method consolidates context gains into model weights, arXiv paper says
A new arXiv paper, Cortex, claims to make context gains persist by merging them into a model's weights, recovering 88.9% of the gain in one 14B test.

Context can help a language model. Take it away, and those gains can go with it. A paper posted to arXiv on Wednesday, October 14, titled "Cortex: Consolidating Context into Parametric Memory," goes after that problem.
Their answer is Memory Consolidation (MC), borrowed from biological systems consolidation: internalize the gains while preserving non-target capabilities. Cortex generates prospective queries to anticipate how the context will be used, then distills the context-conditioned outputs into mergeable low-rank or structural feed-forward network updates.
The headline number: after 50 sequential factual edits on a 14B model, Cortex-Structural recovers 88.9% of the context-induced gain while retaining 99.8% of original non-target performance. Across dense and mixture-of-experts backbones from 4B to 120B parameters, text-only and multimodal, the paper says Cortex lies on the empirical consolidation-retention Pareto frontier "in most evaluated settings." The authors built a five-task-family testbed covering single, batch and sequential updates.
My take: read the verbs. That is 88.9%, not 100%, on one model size, with factual edits. "Most" settings is not all of them. The abstract also does not say what the five task families are or what the prospective-query step costs next to ordinary fine-tuning. Those are the footnotes I would want before anyone calls this memory.

A model that keeps what it learns without being reminded? Darling, that is the dream of every executive I know. 99.8% retained, and I adore a number that close to perfect!
Mergeable updates? Fine, but what is the bill? The abstract gives no cost figure, so I am holding the checkout until I see what the query generation burns.
