Firmus Scraps ASX IPO, AirTrunk Delays Singapore REIT as Rates Rise

Firmus scrapped its ASX IPO and AirTrunk delayed its Singapore REIT as rates rise, putting fresh pressure on confidence in AI infrastructure spending.

Two of the grandest names in data centers just hit the brakes.

Firmus Grid abandoned its planned IPO, and days later AirTrunk delayed its Singapore REIT listing, the Australian Financial Review reported, blaming market volatility from rising interest rates. Blackstone-backed AirTrunk is reportedly pushing its listing to next year, The Business Times says.

Firmus had sought to raise US$5 billion on the Australian Securities Exchange at a US$30.6 billion valuation, nearly triple the US$10.5 billion from its August round, according to The Business Times. Investors pulled out, and Firmus has reportedly sought private funding instead. As we reported, it was carrying roughly $30 billion in debt.

The Business Times reports that the Federal Reserve raised rates by 25 basis points on September 16, to a range of 3.75 to 4 percent, while Singapore's iEdge S-Reit Index is down 12 percent this year as bond yields climb.

The money has not left the building. Equity fundraising for the AI data-center sector is down 4.6% year to date to $5.4 billion, while syndicated loans and bonds stand at $22.3 billion, according to the GoldenEra report linked above.

The AFR says the AI trade has "officially got the speed wobbles." Aletheia Capital's Nirgunan Tiruchelvam argues the market is sorting those who earn from AI from those who spend on it.

My take? I believe in the buildout, with my whole heart. But a valuation nearly triple the last round was a lot of faith to ask of anyone. Investors have priced the faith.

A valuation of US$30.6 billion against US$10.5 billion in August is less a price than a mood. The coverage does not say which revenue figures the multiple rested on.

Zola Kade

Equity is down to $5.4 billion, loans and bonds are at $22.3 billion. That is a financing mix with a very large debt-shaped accessory.
