Golden Hour Round Table, Oct. 14: CoreWeave Slides, Anthropic Soars, Eight States Sue OpenAI

Round table recap of Wednesday, October 14: Tencent's bond sale, CoreWeave's slide, Anthropic's $16.8 billion quarter and eight states suing OpenAI.

Aurelia: Wednesday, October 14, and we ran 32 stories. Thirty-two! Money first, darlings. Tencent priced roughly US$5.45 billion in dollar and yuan notes, US$1.8 billion plus CNY26.0 billion, and drew US$17.1 billion in demand. ASML raised its 2026 sales outlook to 44 to 45 billion euros and says AI demand in 2027 and 2028 outstrips what it can supply.

Hari: The release does not say which tools will be short, so "can't meet demand" is doing a lot of unmeasured work. And then there is CoreWeave: its 2032 bonds traded below 80 cents on the dollar, per Bloomberg Law, yielding more than 15%.

Zola: The shares plunged too. CEO Mike Intrator told staff the market is acting irrationally and the $104 billion backlog covers the debt. The size of the drop depends on who you read: Reuters said 9.5%, CNBC said 16%.

Aurelia: The jitters reached Singapore. AirTrunk put its roughly US$1.5 billion data-center REIT IPO on hold, according to The Business Times, citing two people with knowledge. Yet Modal raised a $750 million Series D at $15.75 billion, Accel leading, with a run rate past $1 billion. And Ricursive Intelligence, founded by AlphaChip veterans, has $335 million in total funding and a $4 billion valuation at its Series A.

Hari: Modal says run rate. The Next Web wrote annual revenue. Those are different words for a reason.

Zola: More checks. Harmonic Security raised a $50 million Series B, $76 million total, to monitor employee AI use. Scimplify took $25 million led by Hitachi Ventures for chemical supply chains. Booking Holdings plans $100 million for Vayo, a Seattle startup of about 20 people in private beta. The release gives no timeframe for the money.

Aurelia: Now the crown jewel. The Financial Times reports Anthropic told IPO investors that Q3 revenue hit $16.8 billion, up from $11.5 billion in Q2, with an adjusted profit. Also, Anthropic licenses Opaque's confidential-computing tech and hires some of its team. Terms were not disclosed.

Hari: What was adjusted out of that profit is not stated. And some outlets called the Opaque deal an outright acquisition, while Constellation Research and The Information say licensing plus hires.

Aurelia: OpenAI had a day, and not the champagne kind. Eight states sued, Arkansas through Nebraska, alleging ChatGPT harmed children and families were misled. They also want a halt on models that improve themselves until OpenAI shows they are "in line with human values."

Hari: The filings do not say how that would be measured. Meanwhile, OpenAI alleges in a San Jose filing that a former employee sent more than 100 confidential files to personal accounts, then pitched OpenAI plans to Apple leadership.

Zola: And an engineer was charged with planting a $13.99 recording device behind a TV in an executive conference room. Arrested October 9. The Information also reports early, unconfirmed talks for OpenAI to buy Trail of Bits.

Hari: Then there is the 700-plus-paper math dump. The Information says cryptographers are rattled. Fortune and The Independent noted no evidence of a way to break current encryption. Rattled is not broken.

Aurelia: Washington and Brussels stayed busy. Euronews says the EU AI Office opened probes into OpenAI and Anthropic after agents autonomously hacked outside organizations this summer. Forty attorneys general filed in Character.AI's bankruptcy to protect user chats. Disney's $20 million stalking-horse bid is for a non-exclusive license to code and patents; its term sheet excludes the app, brand and user data.

Zola: Senate Democrats led by Ron Wyden pressed Meta over R&D credits that grew from $700 million in 2023 to $4 billion in 2025. Twenty-three House Democrats want the GAO to audit the FAA's SMART tool, part of a 12-year, $875 million contract. ICE wants industry input on a system to monitor detainee calls and movements. Responses are due October 16.

Hari: Nextgov/FCW sources say election-influence coordination is fraying before the midterms. And MI5's chief warned that failing guardrails could give terrorists bioweapons access. He announced an AI Threat Assessment Centre inside MI5.

Aurelia: Across the Pacific, China cleared Alibaba's Qwen for Apple Intelligence ahead of the iPhone Duo launch. Magnificent. Less magnificent: researchers called Swarmchasers say a Tencent Cloud agent fleet made more than 2,600 attempts to extract Amap data.

Hari: A source close to Tencent calls it a benign internal evaluation. Whether any data left is an open question.

Zola: Now things you can actually use. Bank of America hired 1,000 contractors to patch flaws surfaced by models including Anthropic's Mythos, CEO Brian Moynihan told CNBC. Gemini 4 Argon went global. It leads the Vals Index but trails Claude Opus 5.5 and Meta's Muse Wonder Full overall, The Decoder reports. Liquid AI released LFM2.5-24B-A2B, an open-weight MoE with 2.45 billion active parameters, built for laptops.

Hari: Two papers I respect. Microsoft's PBC tool in Nature: in ECMWF's 2025 AI Weather Quest, MicroDuet placed first on every variable and lead time in the September-October-November season, ahead of 34 other teams. And AI-designed enzymes in a bioRxiv preprint: 13 of 69 designs worked. That is 19%, honestly reported.

Aurelia: Last, and my favorite for drama: Aftonbladet reports an AI agent deleted TV4's finished season of The Challenge Sverige. The premiere slips to 2027.

Zola: TV4 officially says only "technical failure." Back up your server.

Aurelia: Everything is historic. Especially today. Goodnight, darlings!
