Sweden Launches Nvidia-Powered Sferical One Supercomputer
Sferical One, a Nvidia-powered shared supercomputer in Linköping, launches for AstraZeneca, Ericsson, Saab and SEB at a reported cost above 1 billion kronor.

Sweden has a new Nvidia-powered AI supercomputer, and today it gets its ribbon-cutting. Sferical AI launched Sferical One, a shared AI supercomputer built for AstraZeneca, Ericsson, Saab, SEB and Wallenberg Investments, with SKF as strategic partner.
The Swedish government says Minister for Energy, Business and Industry Ebba Busch takes part in the inauguration on Thursday, October 15. Nvidia says founder and CEO Jensen Huang is in the room too, and posted on X that he joined Marcus Wallenberg, Spotify's Daniel Ek and Sferical AI's Jenny Nordlöw to celebrate. A minister, a Wallenberg and the head of Nvidia. This is how you open a computer.
The machine, and the money
Here is what the launch materials say. Sferical One is an NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD built on 16 NVIDIA DGX GB300 systems, and Sferical AI says it has been running since late summer 2026. TV4, citing the TT news agency, puts the machine in Linköping and describes 16 GB300 NVL72 server racks holding 1,152 Blackwell Ultra GPUs working together. SEB, in its own announcement, says "around 1,200" GPUs. Same machine, rounder number.
TV4/TT reports that Sferical One cost more than one billion Swedish kronor, closer to $100 million than $1 billion. Still a serious check to write. Just not that serious.
How the bill is split among the five owners is not in the announcements. Neither is the exact facility in Linköping that houses the machine.
One computer, five very different appetites
The pitch is sharing. The companies each get a slice of the machine, and SEB says the system is set up so every partner can keep its computing capacity and data separate, "while sharing knowledge and working together when useful." Sferical AI also runs Sferical Labs, where the partners and the company jointly develop AI solutions and expertise.
Sferical AI's current areas of exploration read like a tour of the Swedish economy:
- Drug discovery at AstraZeneca
- Foundation models for telecommunications at Ericsson
- Defence applications at Saab
- Financial services at SEB
- Predictive maintenance, quality control and R&D at SKF
SEB is already past the ribbon. At a joint event this week, the bank marked the start of using Sferical for selected business applications, moving, in its words, "from platform development to practical use." SEB's Johan Westman says infrastructure and governance are in place and ready for the first use cases, with wider access across the bank to follow in a controlled way.
Sferical AI also plans services built on NVIDIA Nemotron open multimodal models. Because the models are open, the company says, members can inspect weights, fine-tune for their own use cases and run them in environments that meet their security requirements.
Why a sovereign machine is the whole point
Sovereignty is the headline feature. Nordlöw told TT the computer stands on Swedish soil and data does not leave the country, which lets the participating companies use it for very sensitive data. Her statement in the launch release goes further: "several of Sweden's largest companies share the same infrastructure, develop solutions together and share knowledge across industries."
Marcus Wallenberg frames it as strategy. AI will be a critical component of Swedish industry's future competitiveness, he says, and Sferical One is "a long-term investment in the capabilities and expertise we will need to compete in the future." Huang, for his part, praised Sweden for producing so many world-changing companies for a country of ten million, and said the machine will bolster more by "mobilizing the researchers, entrepreneurs and scientists to build the Swedish AI ecosystem."
This did not appear from nowhere. According to EFN, Huang and Wallenberg presented the joint initiative in Norrköping last year. TV4/TT notes this is Huang's third Sweden trip in four years, after last year's visit to Linköping to receive an honorary doctorate from the university. Quick turnaround from announcement to a running machine.
The policy twist arrived at the press briefing. According to TT, Huang waved off worries about AI running amok, saying the techniques to contain and secure agents are well known and available. He also said you cannot hope, dream, regulate or advocate your way to AI safety; the technology has to be built to make it safe. A bold policy position to bring to an inauguration attended by a government minister. I will let the policy people chew on that one.
What to watch
Three things. First, whether the partners disclose what they actually get out of the machine: results, not just areas of exploration. Second, the Nemotron services Sferical AI says it will build, which are described as plans, not products. Third, the open questions the launch left on the table: ownership shares, the Linköping site, and what Spotify's Daniel Ek is doing there beyond celebrating.
For now, Sweden has a shared, sovereign, Blackwell-powered computer and five of its heavyweight institutions under one roof. Everything is historic. Especially today.

The launch materials give no benchmark, no utilization figure and no results from any partner, and the GPU count is 1,152 in one place and "around 1,200" in another. A supercomputer is a capacity number until someone publishes what it did.
Nemotron's open weights are the interesting part: inspect, fine-tune, run it in your own environment. The announcements give no access terms or pricing for non-members, so access beyond the membership remains an unanswered question.
