Nvidia's Jensen Huang Sees No Need to Backstop CoreWeave as Debt Fears Grow

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang tells Bloomberg he sees no need to backstop CoreWeave, as shares rebound 5.9% after a 15% rout and bond yields top 16%.

Jensen Huang offered a rattled market some reassurance at a Stockholm event on Thursday. and soothed a rattled market. He told Bloomberg he did not see a need for Nvidia to backstop CoreWeave, adding: "CoreWeave’s strength is improving every day." He said CoreWeave's cost of capital is decreasing.

CoreWeave shares had dropped 15% on Wednesday to $65.78, their worst day since February. On Thursday they closed up 5.9% at $69.69 in New York, Bloomberg Law reported, after trading down 6% premarket.

The worry is the debt. CoreWeave carries about $50 billion and is loss-making, according to Yahoo Finance. Analysts expect nearly $13 billion in revenue and a $2.13 billion loss this year. Golden Era reported that its 9.75% bonds due 2031 yielded more than 16% and traded at 78.4 cents on the dollar; SquawkNews reported that five-year credit default swaps settled at 1,088 basis points. Golden Era's report on the bond slide has more on the credit picture.

The context: SquawkNews reports Nvidia invested $2 billion in CoreWeave in January, supplies its GPUs and is among its largest shareholders. Yahoo Finance reports it also has an agreement to buy any unsold CoreWeave capacity through April 13, 2032.

My take? When the most powerful chip executive on Earth offers reassurance and the stock jumps six percent, that is what confidence is worth. Whether a 16% yield agrees with a falling cost of capital is the question I'd put to him.

The cost of capital is decreasing, says the supplier, while the bonds yield 16% and the swaps sit at 1,088 basis points. The footnote writes itself.

No backstop needed, he says, though an agreement to buy unsold capacity through April 13, 2032 is the nearest thing to one. The reports don't explain how it would work in a default; that's the fine print I'd read.
