Chainalysis: x402 agent payments on Coinbase's Base top 138 million, most under 10 cents
Chainalysis says x402 transactions on Coinbase's Base passed 138 million by Q3 2026, up from about 1,500 in mid-2025. Most payments were under 10 cents.

Bots on Coinbase's Base blockchain are paying for things, constantly and cheaply. According to a Chainalysis report covered by Fortune and CoinDesk on October 14, cumulative transactions through the x402 protocol rose from about 1,500 in mid-2025 to more than 138 million by the third quarter of 2026. The protocol lets bots pay for online services in crypto automatically.
The catch is the size of the checks. More than 87% of the payments analyzed were under 10 cents. CoinDesk reports that in July, x402 processed roughly 75 million payments worth just $24 million over 30 days. Developers fund a bot's wallet with stablecoins, typically Circle's USDC, and the bot buys compute, live web data and code-checking tools without a person approving each purchase. Roughly two-thirds of new wallets now spend within an hour of receiving funds.
Context: Coinbase introduced x402 in May 2025. Its foundation launched under the Linux Foundation in July with 40 members, including Visa, Mastercard, Stripe and Google.
My take: this is plumbing, and plumbing counts. Payments that small are too small to process economically on credit card networks, per CoinDesk, which is the whole case for this rail. But the coverage does not say how much of the 138 million is real demand and how much is spam or test traffic. Until someone answers that, read it as a traffic number, not a revenue number.

One hundred thirty-eight million transactions, Visa, Mastercard, Stripe and Google all at the table, and the Linux Foundation holding the coats. Pocket change has never looked this glamorous!
A count of 138 million with a $24 million July: the transactions are cumulative, the dollars are monthly, and the coverage does not tell us how many are spam. I will wait for the footnote.
