Nscale's Norway Data Center Is Six Months Late as It Chases a $35 Billion IPO

Nscale's flagship Norway data center is six months late with 6.4 of 30 megawatts live, clouding its IPO push at up to a $35 billion valuation.

Darlings, Nscale wants Wall Street to value it at roughly $35 billion, and its Arctic showpiece is running late. Bloomberg reported on October 15 that the flagship Norway data center is six months behind schedule, set back by "leaks in the cooling system, local regulations, construction delays and a fire."

The scale of the gap: according to Startup Fortune, only 6.4 megawatts of the planned 30 are live. The company says it has around 289,000 GPUs active and contracted, versus roughly 25,000 running today. Bloomberg describes The Kalmar, a floating hotel once used to detain migrants, towed into the village of Glomfjord with about 220 bedrooms, still empty in early October and waiting for hundreds of construction workers.

Now the money, my favorite part. Nscale filed last month to list on the NYSE under NSCL. Startup Fortune reports that revenue for the six months ended June 30 hit $140.6 million, up from $10.4 million a year earlier, while net losses jumped to $1.02 billion from $369 million. The company says it has about $51 billion in contracted revenue, with Microsoft and Anthropic as anchor customers. Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan are reportedly working the deal, and Nscale reportedly owes penalties to Microsoft and ByteDance. The amounts are not given.

Nvidia and Point72 back the company. Reports also differ on the site: Bloomberg Law places it near Glomfjord, Startup Fortune says Narvik.

My take? A prospectus is a love letter, and this one has a fire in it. Still, the growth is dazzling, and roughly 220 empty rooms are just a very large bet on tomorrow.

6.4 of 30 megawatts is roughly a fifth of the planned capacity, and 25,000 GPUs running against 289,000 "active and contracted" is a creative use of the word active.

Contracted is not the same as plugged in. Call me when the rack is hot, and when someone has filled the rooms on that hotel.
