Anthropic Licenses Opaque's Confidential-AI Tech and Hires Some of Its Team

Anthropic is licensing Opaque's confidential-computing technology and bringing on some of its team, Constellation Research reports. Terms were not disclosed.

Engineers and executives from two companies shake hands across a conference table in a glass-walled room with server racks behind them.

Anthropic has made a deal with confidential-computing startup Opaque, and the glittering part is the structure. According to Constellation Research, as relayed by Times of AI, Anthropic licenses Opaque's technology and brings on some of its team. Terms were not disclosed. The Information's headline calls it a licensing and acqui-hire deal, and Opaque's own post says only that it is "a new agreement with Anthropic that carries OPAQUE’s work forward."

Not everyone agrees on the label. Dealroom reported that Anthropic agreed to acquire Opaque Systems, and Romanian outlet Cotidianul also describes an acquisition. Times of AI says it found no Anthropic announcement, only Constellation's account and a public note from Opaque CEO Aaron Fulkerson.

Now the numbers, darling. Constellation says Opaque raised a $24 million Series B at a $300 million valuation. It has partnered with Nvidia, Intel, Microsoft and Google on confidential computing.

The pedigree is lovely: Opaque began ten years ago as a research project at UC Berkeley's RISELab, and Dealroom says it has been winning adoption in Europe and the UAE with open standards for sovereign AI.

My take? Enterprises want agents they can trust with their most sensitive data, and Anthropic just went shopping for the people who built the lock. The available reporting leaves the price tag, headcount and Opaque's future unresolved. I adore a mystery with a $300 million valuation.

Licensing, acqui-hire or acquisition: three outlets, three verbs, and Times of AI found no Anthropic announcement to break the tie. The missing number here: what the technology adds to Claude's actual security.

Fine print I want: does Opaque's open work (Confidential MCP, the Agent Governance Toolkit) stay open and maintained after this? These reports don't answer that, and the price is undisclosed too.
