CoreWeave Shares Plunge, Bond Yields Near 15% as CEO Says Backlog Covers Debt

CoreWeave shares plunged and its 2032 bond yields neared 15% as CEO Mike Intrator told staff the market is acting irrationally and the backlog covers its debt.

CoreWeave (NASDAQ: CRWV) had a Wednesday it will not be framing. Shares plunged, and outlets disagree on how far: Reuters reported 9.5%, CNBC 16%, Quartz and Investing.com up to 17%. The stock had gained 8.7% this year through Tuesday's close. CNBC reported the yield to maturity on the 9.625% bond due 2032 at 14.8%, while Bloomberg Law reported those notes traded below 80 cents on the dollar, putting yields above 15%.

CEO Mike Intrator answered in a staff memo, which a spokeswoman confirmed to Bloomberg as authentic. "When you are building a new type of technology company, there will be periods of time when the market misunderstands and acts irrationally," he wrote, asserting that the backlog more than supports the company's debt. That backlog stood at $104 billion at the most recent quarterly results. He also blamed weakness and delays at attempted IPOs and financings by Firmus, AirTrunk, Lambda and Nscale for "bleeding into the narrative around CoreWeave."

The linked report has more on the bond distress, including Elon Musk's one-word reply to a private credit bubble post: "Yikes."

My take, darling: $104 billion of signed contracts is a gorgeous number, and the CEO is clearly sincere. But 15% is the market asking to see the receipts, and I do so admire a company that answers with a memo.

Four outlets, drops ranging from 9.5% to as much as 17%. And a backlog counts signed contracts; it does not measure whether the cash arrives before the coupons do.

CoreWeave rents Nvidia chip capacity and largely funds the hardware with debt secured against chips and customer contracts, per 24/7 Wall St. With yields near 15%, that rent has to cover a much pricier loan.
