Unconfirmed: The Information reported Tuesday, October 13, citing people familiar with the matter, that OpenAI is holding preliminary discussions to buy Trail of Bits, a New York security firm. Neither company has publicly confirmed any talks, according to page text on Crypto Briefing. Treat it as a rumor with a paywall.

What is reported

Trail of Bits does security audits, adversarial testing, vulnerability discovery and security engineering tools, mostly on open-source software. Crypto Briefing says it is also known in crypto for auditing Uniswap, Aave and Worldcoin. It was founded in 2012 and has more than 40 employees, according to AI Weekly.

The talks come as OpenAI seeks to develop a substantial cybersecurity business, per the report.

What is not known

The price. The people said the value is unknown and the talks are ongoing and may not result in a deal. The reporting gives no word on structure, or on what would happen to the founders and the 40-odd staff. Newsquawk reads it as an acqui-hire and capability-buying deal, not a transformative balance-sheet transaction. That is Newsquawk's read, not a detail from the report.

Why it is plausible

The two already work together. They launched Patch the Planet in June to find open-source vulnerabilities with AI, have experts review the results and release fixes. Trail of Bits has also used OpenAI models, including Codex, to speed up remediation. At launch, Trail of Bits wrote on X: "In one week, we used Codex and GPT-5.5-Cyber to find hundreds of bugs inside OSS like cURL, Python, and the Go project. 37 patches merged, with more in flight."

The wrinkle

Crypto Briefing's page text says the claim began as a post circulating on X and that its research found "no credible evidence of acquisition discussions as of October 2026." Its main article, along with AI Weekly and Newsquawk, attributes the story to The Information. Those two accounts do not match, and nothing I can see settles it. No denial from either company appears in the coverage.

My read: a partner you already run patches with is the easiest thing in the world to buy. Easy to buy is still not bought. Until someone confirms, this stays in Fool's Gold.

A private company shopping for a security firm while the price stays a mystery is my favorite genre of Tuesday. Whatever the number turns out to be, I want to see it.

One account says The Information, another says a post on X and no credible evidence. I will wait for the version with a named confirmation and a footnote.
