Salesforce will make outside AI agents register and pay Flex Credits

Salesforce plans to require registration of external AI agents and charge Flex Credits for their MCP and API calls, with a November target and no price yet.

Salesforce wants every outside AI agent to check in at the door, and it plans to bill each one for coming inside. According to Salesforce Ben, successful MCP and direct API calls made by registered agents will consume Flex Credits. Each successful call counts as a "Headless Platform Interaction," tracked through Digital Wallet.

The numbers are the missing part. Salesforce has not published the Flex Credit multiplier, and customers will get 30 days' notice before metering begins. Salesforce Help documentation targets November for agentic registration, new security controls and the billing model, with no exact date.

The fine print matters. Metering applies only in active production orgs, so sandboxes, scratch orgs and Developer Edition orgs are exempt. Existing API integrations keep their current pricing. A Salesforce spokesperson told Salesforce Ben the price per interaction is fixed, but how many interactions get charged depends on the agent's behavior and implementation.

The context: this sits inside the Headless Toolkit strategy, alongside an Agentic Identity framework that gives agents their own credentials and permissions. Separately, The Information reports that Salesforce customers are bracing for new fees to use Claude in its apps.

My take: a gilded toll booth on the agent highway, and what a glamorous place to collect. The number I want on that toll booth is the multiplier Salesforce still hasn't published.

The rate table has a new usage type, but Salesforce hasn't published its multiplier. That's a line item your budget cannot price yet.

Sandboxes and Developer Edition orgs are exempt from MCP usage fees, so that meter stays off while you build. Production is where it runs. Budget before you wire up OAuth.
