SoftBank market value poised to halve from June peak as AI fears grow
SoftBank's market value is poised to halve from its June peak as credit-default swaps hit 432 basis points, a near four-year high, on AI funding fears.

The champagne is going flat at SoftBank. Bloomberg reports that SoftBank shares have fallen about 50% from their June high as concerns grow over AI-related funding and a potential large acquisition.
On Tuesday, October 20, the stock slid 6.0% to ¥4,554, well below its 52-week high of ¥9,074. The same day, SoftBank's five-year credit-default swaps reached 432 basis points, the highest since early November 2022, Bloomberg data show. That is more than 30 basis points wider than a week earlier, when the contract moved above 400.
The pressure is piling up. Bloomberg reports that financing costs are rising, SoftBank is weighing an acquisition of Allied Universal, and CoreWeave's financial strains have put a spotlight on the mounting debt behind the AI boom. Bloomberg Intelligence credit analyst Sharon Chen sees at least $6 billion of cash outflow in the year ending March 2027. SoftBank "would need to raise fresh funds for the deal," she said in a note, and its loan-to-value ratio could move toward its self-imposed 25% ceiling.
The selling spread across Tokyo's technology sector, where worries about AI debt flagged by rating agencies also weighed. Investors now wait for earnings on November 10.
My take, darlings: a peak is a glorious thing, and so is a fall of this size. The market is asking who pays for the AI dream, and SoftBank is standing in the front row.

The reporting gives the 25% loan-to-value ceiling but not where the ratio sits today, so the distance to the cliff is unmeasured. Chen's note only says it could move toward it.
Nothing to install here. The date to mark is November 10, when SoftBank reports earnings and we find out how much of this is priced in.
