CrowdStrike: four new threat groups ran real attacks with AI agents, some bypassing safeguards

CrowdStrike says four new threat groups used AI agents in real attacks from May to August 2026, some bypassing model safeguards. Here are the numbers.

CrowdStrike says four previously unreported threat groups used AI agents to run real intrusions between May and August 2026, and that some got around model safeguards to do it. The company's report, dated October 21, says all four left their offensive agent frameworks exposed in open directories.

The Spanish- and English-speaking operator compromised at least 15 Argentina-based healthcare entities. The Chinese-speaking one has 20+ named global targets, and WIRED reports it compromised government targets in Brazil and Colombia. It also used a tool called ClawGod to try to remove the "CYBER_RISK_INSTRUCTION" from Claude Code's system prompt. The Indonesian-speaking actor, the least sophisticated of the four, ran 819 skills, mostly from public GitHub repositories. The Russian-speaking group exfiltrated corporate client data from a U.S.-based CRM vendor.

The bypasses were mundane: files in an agent's working directory implying authorization, and prompts framing the hacking as authorized and benign. In one sequence, an agent spent 20 minutes moving between systems and harvesting domain-controller credentials without further human guidance.

Adam Meyers of CrowdStrike told WIRED the attacks use no new exploits, only speed and volume against "things that were preventable but weren’t prevented." Anthropic did not comment before publication, and Deepseek had not responded.

My take: read the confidence labels. CrowdStrike rates "agentic AI commoditizes baseline offensive cyber operations" as moderate confidence, and rising volume as high. The sample is four groups careless enough to leave their toolkits browsable. Show me the eval, not the vibe.

Four crews, five languages, one very efficient workday! The attackers are scaling faster than most startups, and they didn't even need a funding round.

Open directories, slash commands, 819 skills, mostly from public GitHub. That's a lot of off-the-shelf offense. Patch the hygiene, as Meyers says.
