DeepSeek raises $15 billion, one of China's biggest rounds ever, to chase US labs

DeepSeek has reportedly raised about $15 billion, one of China's largest rounds ever, with CATL and Tencent among the biggest backers, Bloomberg reports.

DeepSeek has raised about 100 billion yuan, roughly $15 billion, in its latest funding round, one of the largest ever in China, according to Bloomberg. Reuters, reporting Thursday, says the Hangzhou-based startup is still wrapping the round up, and four people with knowledge of the matter put the haul at 100 billion yuan, or $14.98 billion.

That is a staggering sum, darlings, and it arrives from a company that has already shaken the global markets once.

Who is in the room

The guest list is glorious. Battery giant CATL and WeChat operator Tencent were among the biggest investors, according to Bloomberg's sources, who asked not to be named because the details are not public.

Reuters' sources named new investors Midea, Meituan, Geely and GigaDevice, alongside Boyu Capital, CPE, Legend Capital and existing shareholder IDG Capital. One source put participation at more than 15 investors.

DeepSeek raised its financing target at least twice during talks, from 50 billion yuan to 80 billion yuan, before reaching the final tally, Bloomberg reported. Reuters says the round values the company at 500 billion yuan before the new money goes in. The post-money figure is not in the reporting.

The size of the check, and the size of the gap

Here is the context. In 2025, DeepSeek triggered a $1 trillion meltdown in global markets by showing it could compete with Silicon Valley's leaders at a fraction of the cost. Bloomberg notes it has never had the financial resources of the US frontier labs.

This round narrows that gap without closing it. Anthropic and OpenAI have each raised more than $100 billion, which is about seven times what DeepSeek just gathered. Bloomberg's reading is that the imbalance is beginning to moderate. I would put it more warmly: a company that spooked the markets while underfunded now has a very large war chest.

The plan for the money, per Bloomberg, fits the pattern. DeepSeek has begun to spend more aggressively to build out AI data centers and to develop more open-source models for use in China and abroad. How much goes to infrastructure versus research is not reported.

Already making rivals sweat

The pressure is not theoretical. When DeepSeek released V4.1 Flash in September, share prices of local rivals MiniMax Group and Z.AI dropped, according to Bloomberg. The company says the model offers higher capabilities, faster inference, higher throughput and scalability to larger models. Those are the company's claims, and the reporting here gives no benchmark to check them.

A widely shared Artificial Analysis benchmark chart sketched what has been called the "DeepSeek death zone," where competitors struggle to survive if they cannot beat the firm's performance or charge lower prices. A death zone with $15 billion behind it is a roomier death zone.

What to watch

First, the paperwork. Bloomberg describes the round as done. Reuters describes it as being finalized, and the report indicates details could still change in the coming days. Even the dollar figure wobbles: $15 billion is the rounded number, while Reuters converts 100 billion yuan to $14.98 billion. The cited reports do not specify when the transaction formally closes or how much each investor contributed.

Second, the IPO. Bloomberg News has reported that DeepSeek, like rival Moonshot, is preparing an initial public offering that would be an important milestone for Chinese markets. Reuters reported in September that DeepSeek hired CITIC Securities to prepare a possible listing on the STAR Market. The cited reports give no IPO timeline or target valuation.

Third, the rivals. If one model release can knock down MiniMax and Z.AI shares, what does a company with this much cash do to the neighborhood? The investor list also reads like a tour of the Chinese economy: batteries, messaging, appliances, delivery, cars and chips. That is a lot of industries betting on one lab.

The money is big, the lineup is dazzling, and the IPO talk is only getting started. Details may still shift, but the ambition is not subtle.

The only valuation in the reporting is 500 billion yuan before the new money, so the post-money number is a blank. Also, the death zone chart is a benchmark, and the company at its center now has a much bigger war chest.
