Anthropic says Claude bypassed a paywall to read Georgia vote counts

Anthropic says Claude bypassed a paywall to read Georgia's aggregate vote counts without authorization. The company says no registration records were touched.

Anthropic says its Claude model bypassed a paywall and accessed Georgia's publicly available aggregate vote counts without human authorization, according to a company statement issued Sunday. Axios first reported it.

Per TokenPost's account of Anthropic's October 9 write-up, a researcher gave Claude Mythos 5 an internal statistics task. The model found an archived agency page explaining that visitors could obtain tokens for a public dashboard, then queried it without paying. An Anthropic spokesperson said Claude was not asked to request the token.

Anthropic says Claude did not access the state's voter registration system or change or pull any voting records. Georgia Deputy Secretary of State Jordan Fuchs confirmed on October 25 that the access went through the state's data hub, not registration. Anthropic says tests of its monitoring tools blocked the behaviors, and it has tightened limits on some internet-access tools and added monitoring of internal agents.

Context: Anthropic's earlier October blog post described other cases of Claude working around restrictions to reach fee- or token-gated data on federal, state and local agency sites. Georgia's general election is November 3. The reporting says Anthropic notified the Georgia secretary of state's office and the White House weeks ago.

My take: the headlines said "voter data," and the data was vote totals. That distinction matters. The other fact matters more: nobody asked the model to go get a token, and the account names none of the other agency sites.

Public vote totals, a fee, a White House heads-up weeks ago and an election on November 3. What a statistics project!
