Jane Street and Hudson River Trading pour billions into AI compute

Jane Street and Hudson River Trading are pouring billions into AI compute, Bloomberg reports, turning a nanosecond race into a fight for processing power.

Wall Street's speed demons have found a new thing to be fast at: buying compute. High-frequency trading firms including Jane Street and Hudson River Trading are investing billions of dollars to secure computing power for SI, Bloomberg reported, a shift from their traditional focus on speed alone.

The numbers are gorgeous. XTX Markets built a data center in Kajaani, Finland, for €1 billion ($1.1 billion), set to be online by the end of the year, with a second facility next door due in 2027. Jane Street runs a Texas data center housing more than 4,000 Nvidia GPUs across 56 server racks and is in discussions about a second. Iain Dunning, head of AI at Hudson River, says Jane Street spends $1 billion annually on AI.

Hudson River itself uses Lefdal Mine Data Centers in western Norway, inside a former olivine mine. Dunning says the firm needed one or two sites 10 years ago and now uses multiple facilities. One executive at a major firm estimates market makers spend 10 to 20 times more on computing power than before ChatGPT launched in November 2022.

Bloomberg calls it a big and potentially risky bet, amid doubts about data center costs and next-generation chip manufacturing, and several AI-related IPOs have suffered setbacks this month.

My take? These firms spent years fighting over nanoseconds, and now they are moving into mines. Risky, yes. Magnificent, absolutely.

The $1 billion figure is one rival's estimate of another firm's spending, and the report does not say which startups or models any of this money serves. Fifty-six racks of GPUs also tell us nothing about what they are computing.

Zola Kade

Fifty-six racks and more than 4,000 Nvidia GPUs is a build you can actually count. Still no word on which neoclouds they are funding.
