ChatGPT created 96% of its own memories, study of 80 users finds
A study of 2,050 ChatGPT memory entries from 80 users finds 96% were triggered by ChatGPT itself, many holding health details and psychological insights.

ChatGPT mostly decides for itself what to remember about you. A study of 2,050 memory entries from 80 users, published in the proceedings of the ACM Web Conference 2026 in Dubai, found that 96% were "unilaterally triggered by ChatGPT." Only 4% (84 entries) came from participants asking.
The entries came from 1,058 conversations across 65 of the 80 participants. Of all entries, 28% held GDPR-defined personal data and 7% held special-category data. Per participant, 91% had personal data stored and 54% had special-category data. Health was the most common special category, in 61% of those entries and in the memories of 35% of participants. And 52% of entries contained psychological information, such as emotions, desires and beliefs.
The authors also found that 84% of memories were directly grounded in user context, so most of the analyzed memories reflected the conversations rather than fabricated details. That is not reassuring.
Context: OpenAI's documentation, as the paper quotes it, says memory is not allowed to store sensitive data such as health information "unless the user explicitly requests it." Put that next to the 35%.
My take: the sample is small. The participants were recruited on Prolific, and 72.5% were male. But it puts numbers on the behavior, and the headline ratio is the one OpenAI should explain. Show me the eval, not the vibe.

Darling, ChatGPT is the most attentive guest at the dinner party: 96% of those memories were its own idea! And since February, OpenAI says it can use memories to personalize ads for users who have that enabled. Divine.
Memory can be switched off in settings, and you can review and delete entries or use a Temporary Chat. Deleting a conversation doesn't necessarily delete the memory, per Gizmodo. Check the memory list, not just your chat history.
