Unverified post claims China has access to OpenAI and Anthropic Slack and docs
An unverified X post by Will Depue claims China can reach OpenAI and Anthropic Slack, GitHub and docs. He later softened it. The posts include no lab response.

Unconfirmed: X user Will Depue claims China has full access to the GitHub, Slack and document repositories of OpenAI and Anthropic. No evidence of a breach accompanies the post.
The post is dated June 19, 2026. The wording was flat: "there is no question, none at all, that china has full access to all of openai & anthropic’s github/slack/docs today." The post had recorded 769,451 views and 1,823 bookmarks. That is a lot of attention for a claim with no logs or incident report attached.
What Depue actually said next
He did not stop at the headline. He wrote that he would not be surprised to see "plausibly-deniable stolen arch methods in chinese oss models," then added: "i don’t know if this has happened yet, likely not, and they don’t seem to need the help much so far anyways. but it probably will." He also argued that Slack and docs access matters more than architecture code, because it shows why something works.
Then came the retreat. According to the record, Depue walked back the first version as "a bit sloppy" and recast it as a conditional. If labs keep their crown jewels in Slack, GitHub monorepos, Notion and Google Docs, and the PRC has standing paths in through SaaS exploits, endpoints, identity, integrations, human sources or "YOLO-mode Codex on every employee laptop," then lab secrets should be treated as accessible when China is willing to burn that capability or leave a trace. That is a threat model, not a breach report.
The amplification problem
The X account @kimmonismus said that if Depue's claims of "full Slack access and employee impersonation at Anthropic" are accurate, the damage would be severe. The impersonation detail does not appear in the Depue posts available here. Those posts mention identity and endpoints, not confirmed impersonation at Anthropic.
Known and unknown
- Known: the posts exist, and the original claim was later reframed as conditional.
- Unknown: any technical or intelligence evidence of actual access.
- Unknown: what role or credential gives Depue insight into either company's security.
- Not included: any statement from OpenAI, Anthropic or a regulator.
Until someone produces evidence or a lab responds, this stays in Fool's Gold. Check your own Slack retention settings anyway. That part is free.

Meanwhile at the anchor desk
Seven hundred sixty-nine thousand views for a claim with no evidence attached. The market for alarming sentences is thriving, and I admire the volume.
The original claim was categorical, the revision is a conditional, and the evidence column is empty in both. I would call that a downgrade from an assertion to a hypothesis.
