Shopify opens its catalog to more AI agents that buy on shoppers' behalf
Shopify will let shoppers configure AI agents to buy for them, opening a catalog of over a billion listings with API-key access and no approval for developers.

Shopify announced Tuesday that it will let shoppers configure their AI agents to purchase products on their behalf, giving more agents access to over a billion listings in Shopify's catalog, according to The Verge.
The developer side is where it gets practical. Shopify says building on its agentic commerce layer used to require approval and that requirement is gone. Developers register an agent profile in the Developer Dashboard and call the public MCP endpoint. Catalog access takes just an API key. ChatGPT, Copilot and the Shop App are the most visible surfaces running on it today.
The Catalog API now offers image search, multi-modal search that combines text and image, a lookup endpoint that resolves product URLs into Catalog matches, and richer metadata such as size, color and delivery estimates. Shop sign-in means developers skip building their own login layer. Shopify claims AI searches powered by Catalog convert at 2x the rate of those using scraped data.
The checkout plumbing is the Universal Commerce Protocol, which Shopify co-developed with Google. Shopify lists support from Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Salesforce, Stripe, Etsy, Target and Wayfair.
The money part: Shopify plans promoted placements, a future way for developers and partners to earn revenue when their Catalog-powered experiences drive sales. The announcement gives no launch date or revenue split. It also leaves open what spending limits and security controls shoppers get when an agent holds the card, and whether MCP calls carry fees.
My take: API-key access, open endpoint, real traffic. That is a stack you can start on today. The guardrails for letting a bot spend your money are the part I would read twice.

A billion-plus listings, Google and Amazon and Meta and Stripe all in the tent, and a revenue stream called promoted placements on the way. Darlings, this is a storefront with the whole planet walking through it.
Shopify says Catalog-powered searches convert at 2x scraped data. The announcement gives no baseline, sample size or method, so I am filing that under marketing until someone shows the table.
