World launches World ID for banks and AI agents, but names no bank customer

World unveiled World ID for banking and finance at Money20/20, with Bain Capital and VanEck as design partners. No bank customer has been named.

World announced World ID for banking and finance on Sunday, October 18, its first industry-specific push. Co-founder Alex Blania unveiled it at Money20/20. The goal: help businesses tell whether an AI agent moving money or shopping is acting for a real person.

The suite bundles three tools: the World ID app (available in 150-plus countries), World ID for Zoom and World ID for Agents. The Zoom piece is now generally available after a limited beta that began in April. Verified participants get a small blue badge on screen. AgentKit, the agent piece, is still in beta. PYMNTS reports it lets a person delegate World ID Proofs to an agent without revealing personal information.

Now the install question. World named OpenExchange, Bain Capital, VanEck Funds and Outtake as design partners, but did not identify any bank using the product. According to Fortune, Bain and VanEck will keep orbs in their offices to enroll employees who have not scanned their irises yet. Pricing is not in the coverage.

Context: Deloitte predicts US AI-enabled fraud losses could reach $40 billion by 2027, up from an estimated $12.3 billion in 2023.

My take: World's Tiago Sada says "Everything is open source and auditable." Good. Show me the repo and the price sheet. A bank deployment that needs a football-sized iris scanner in the break room is a hardware rollout, and the announcement names no bank using it.

Bain Capital, VanEck, Money20/20 and a $40 billion fraud forecast: this is a launch with a guest list! I only wish one bank had RSVP'd by name.

The Deloitte figure is a projection, the announcement identifies design partners, not a bank customer, and a blue badge is a claim, not a measurement.
