Sydney man arrested after Interpol flags his Claude conversations about a childcare shooting

A Sydney man was arrested after Interpol flagged his Claude chats, in which he allegedly threatened a childcare shooting. Court has remanded him for assessment.

A 29-year-old Sydney man, David Lan Thackray, was arrested on Sunday after Interpol flagged his interactions with Claude, according to The Sydney Morning Herald. He is charged with using a carriage service to menace, harass or offend.

Sutherland Local Court heard on Monday that Thackray allegedly told the chatbot he planned to shoot several children at a childcare centre near his Hurstville home. A police facts sheet says he allegedly said he would "go down to the local Westfield right now and shoot up the local daycare". He also referenced alleged Bondi Beach terrorist Naveed Akram. The court remanded him in custody pending a mental health assessment.

His lawyer, Danilo Rajkovic, described a tirade born of stress and frustration after Thackray tried to use Claude to treat an ear infection. "There was no weight behind what he was saying," Rajkovic said. Thackray used voice mode, believed the exchange was private, is an international relations student, and has no criminal history.

Context: Anthropic's policy allows sharing user data with law enforcement where it believes that is necessary to prevent an emergency involving danger of death or serious physical injury. Its September report said its Threat Intelligence team disrupted misuse attempts across seven areas between December 2025 and August 2026.

My take: the reporting does not say what words tripped the safety block, or how the flag traveled from Anthropic to Interpol to Sydney police. Those two gaps are the actual story. Show me the eval, not the vibe.

A chat window, Interpol, a courtroom and a custody order, all in a matter of days. The reach of this machinery is breathtaking, and I would love to see the paperwork on how it got there.
