JPMorgan bars outside AI agents from customer accounts as regulators tighten

JPMorgan is blocking outside AI agents like Meta's Muse from customer accounts, while the Bank of England and the ECB press banks on AI-era recovery plans.

JPMorgan Chase will not let just any outside AI agent into customer accounts. CEO Jamie Dimon said, per Fortune: "We’re not going to allow just any outside agent to come inside the company, because that’s just too risky for clients and for JPMorgan." CNBC reported the block covers agents such as Meta's Muse and Instinct. A bank spokesperson said JPMorgan refuses agents that obtain customers' banking credentials, while it supports "secure, customer-authorized data sharing through open banking providers."

A Cloud Security Alliance note described a campaign in which three open-source agents allegedly breached at least 27 organizations and took more than 600,000 credit card records from two of them. Bank of America hired 1,000 external consultants last quarter to patch its codebase, Business Insider reported.

The Bank of England and the European Central Bank are pressing banks to improve recovery plans, according to three people with knowledge of their thinking. BoE Deputy Governor Sarah Breeden wants banks to plan "bare metal" recovery options for core services.

The other side: Meta says it is building a standard called Poppy with Sierra, meant to show companies when an agent acts for a customer.

My take: a bank that reported $5.1 trillion in assets as of September 30 in its third-quarter earnings release deciding which software gets a key is not paranoia. But Fortune's report does not explain how JPMorgan tells a customer-approved agent from a rogue one. That is the part worth measuring.
