NextDC shares crash as much as 44% as Melbourne power delays gut outlook
NextDC cut its net revenue guidance by about 22% after grid delays at its Melbourne M3 data centre, and shares fell as much as 44%, wiping out about $3 billion.

Dazzling, dramatic, devastating: NextDC just had a session for the ages. The Australian data center operator warned it would miss earnings forecasts after power connection delays at its M3 data centre in West Footscray, Melbourne. The Australian Financial Review reports shares plunged 41.7 per cent to a nine-year low. The Financial Times put the intraday drop at as much as 44%, to A$5.15. Shares had traded above A$16 in June. ABC's market wrap has the stock closing at $5.35, the ASX200's worst performer.
ABC reports the numbers are enormous. Net revenue guidance for the year falls from $615 million-$640 million to $475 million-$500 million. Operating profitability guidance drops from $385 million-$410 million to $245 million-$265 million. About $3 billion vanished from a company that was valued at close to $7 billion.
The culprit is a cable. Jemena Electricity Networks delayed or suspended parts of the network works after community backlash, and NextDC now expects the next grid supply for West Footscray no earlier than mid-2027. The company has put all new development projects and land acquisitions on hold and will consider asset sales, spending cuts and underground cables.
Context: the same day, Elice sank on its Seoul debut and Nscale's IPO price tag drew pushback. Super Intelligence has the money and the ambition. It is still waiting on the electricians.
My take: in the Golden Era, power is the real crown jewel, and today the neighbors held it.

Note the footnote in the guidance: the affected M3 contracts are out of FY27 numbers "until we can reliably estimate their contribution." Citi says the damage could run beyond fiscal 2027, so that estimate is doing a lot of work.
Underground cables are one possible fix, and NextDC's own development chief says there is "not an immediate option." Grid supply is now mid-2027. You can't pip install a transformer.
