Google adds native PyTorch engines for vLLM and SGLang on TPU
Google launches native PyTorch backends for vLLM and SGLang on TPU, and open-sources TorchTPU. Its Ironwood cost claim: 2.01 cents per million tokens.

Google today launched native PyTorch backends for vLLM and SGLang on TPU, so the two serving frameworks no longer have to go through JAX to run on Google's chips. The vLLM backend was built with Inferact, the SGLang one with RadixArk. Google says developers kept asking to customize and debug their serving stack in PyTorch. The JAX versions stay maintained and supported.
Underneath is TorchTPU, which makes the TPU a native PyTorch device: standard tensors on a "tpu" device, no wrapper types, eager mode or torch.compile through XLA. It was co-developed with Meta's PyTorch team and is now open source on GitHub, announced at PyTorch Conference 2026, according to TSN.
The numbers, from Google's post: Qwen 3.5 on Ironwood (TPU 7x) reaches 2.01 cents per million tokens at high concurrency on SemiAnalysis InferenceX benchmarks. A Pallas megakernel for the 2.8T-parameter Kimi K3 serves more than 700 tokens per second to a single user. SGLang-TorchTPU is already running in production at Meta.
vLLM is also launching a free TPU capacity pool for developers who contribute to both engines.
One gap, per Google's companion TorchTitan post: TorchTPU does not yet support the torch.Stream abstraction.
My take: a repo and a price per token is the format I like. The cost figure comes from Google's own stack, so rerun it before you budget around it. The free compute for contributors is the smartest part.

Free TPU compute for contributors, Meta running it in production, and a price quoted in cents per million tokens. Google is not asking developers to switch, it is paying for their visit.
The 2.01 cents comes from a stack Google's own engineering teams further optimized, and the companion post admits TorchTPU lacks torch.Stream support. I will wait for the independent run.
