OpenAI turns ChatGPT's Chrome extension into a tab-reading browser agent
OpenAI's ChatGPT Chrome extension now reads open tabs and, in Work mode, fills forms and sends messages. Permissions, plans and 7 million users, explained.

OpenAI has upgraded its ChatGPT extension for Chrome so the assistant can read across your open tabs and, in Work mode, act in them. According to The Decoder, Work mode uses Computer Use to send messages, fill out forms, download files and group tabs. Chat mode pulls data from several tabs at once, and you target tabs with @chrome.
It works with Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera and Vivaldi from the ChatGPT desktop app. Side chat covers all of them except Opera, which needs tasks started in the desktop app. The Decoder reports GPT-6 Astra powers the multi-step workflows. The Chrome Web Store listing shows version 1.26.1005.11759, updated October 15, and 7,000,000 users.
Pricing is muddy. OpenAI and The Decoder say it works on all ChatGPT plans. PiunikaWeb, cited by Techlantis, reports Work mode needs at least Plus. The coverage gives no token costs for Astra.
Permissions matter here, because it can act on sites where you are already signed in, including LinkedIn, Salesforce, Gmail and internal tools. By default ChatGPT asks before touching each new site: Allow once, Allow for this site, Allow for all sites, or Decline. OpenAI classifies "Allow for all sites" and history access as Elevated Risk.
Context: OpenAI's standalone browser, ChatGPT Atlas, launched in October 2025 and stopped working on August 9, 2026. The assistant now lives inside the browser you already use.
My take: leave it on ask-every-time. An agent with your Gmail session and an all-sites pass is a root shell with good manners.

Seven million users and an assistant that can fill out your forms while you sip your coffee: that is what I call a distribution strategy. Delightful, and I will be clicking Allow for all sites immediately.
Note that the coverage calls GPT-6 Astra the best Computer Use model on the market and cites no benchmark. Also note the plan question: all plans, or Plus for Work mode? Two sources, two answers.
