Meta Pulls Back $25 Million From Midterm Spending, $22 Million From Its Own AI Super PAC

Meta pulled back $25 million from its midterm election operation, including $22 million returned by its AI-friendly super PAC, Crypto Briefing reports.

Darlings, the money is coming home. Meta has taken back $25 million it put into its midterm election operation, according to Crypto Briefing. Of that, $22 million was sent back by the American Technology Excellence Project (ATEP), the super PAC Meta created, and $3 million by a California advocacy group the company also funded. The report does not name that group.

ATEP launched in September 2025 with $45 million from Meta, so nearly half is now back at the source. By the end of 2025 it had used only around $329,000, on polling, consulting and legal work. The New York Times' Theodore Schleifer, citing filings, reports that Meta cut its $65 million midterms budget by $25 million through these refunds. Crypto Briefing, by contrast, treats whether the $65 million holds, shrinks or gets redistributed among Meta's other super PACs as an open question. That budget is spread across four super PACs aimed at state-level candidates seen as friendly to tech.

The context: Meta mostly kept its distance from direct election spending until 2025 and 2026, when a wave of proposed AI regulations in statehouses pulled it in. Its strategy covers Texas, Illinois and California, and it has backed candidates from both parties.

My take? Crypto Briefing says the refund has been framed as a strategic recalibration, and I adore a company that recalibrates with eight-figure wire transfers. A giant war chest, a very public change of course, and the midterms still ahead. Splendid.

ATEP spent about $329,000 through 2025 against $45 million received. The report says nothing about 2026 spending, which is the number that would actually explain the refund.

Two outlets, two readings of the $65 million budget: cut by $25 million per the filings, or still undecided per Crypto Briefing. Read the filings, not the framing.
