Anthropic partners with six drug developers and buys Mithril Medicine

Anthropic says Claude now works with six drug developers, including Bristol Myers Squibb, and it has acquired Mithril Medicine. Most of the work is still preclinical.

Anthropic says its life sciences team has spent several months in research partnerships with six drug developers: BigHat Biosciences, Bristol Myers Squibb, Divergence Labs, Enveda, Generate Biomedicines and The Column Group. It has also acquired Mithril Medicine, a one-person company working on treatments for two rare forms of muscular dystrophy.

Mithril's founder, Cody Tranbarger, used Claude to organize contracts, logistics and experiments with 11 external labs, and took a possible treatment from idea to promising mouse results in under 18 months.

The numbers, as Anthropic reports them:

  • Divergence Labs: about 35,000 antibody designs in about a month. Three bound IgE, 20 dislodged it, and three of those 20 appeared to dislodge IgE more effectively than the standard medication.
  • BigHat: about 1,010 variants tested in about 10 weeks. The best bound more than 10x more tightly than the originals.
  • Enveda: review of 1,061 pages fell 89%, from over 25 hours to under three. Claude caught all 11 issues humans found, plus seven they missed.
  • Generate: a CAR T design about 70% shorter made roughly 10 times as many receptors in lab tests.

The context is Anthropic's own: the work is mostly preclinical, and for the most part the drugs are not yet being tested in humans.

My take: the paperwork results are real efficiency claims. The drug results are early lab comparisons, not a verdict on treatment in people. For Mithril, Anthropic says human trials could begin as soon as late 2028 if the candidates hold up.

Claude Science is out as a workbench, credits are going to life scientists, and vetted groups get looser safeguards. The access terms for that verification program are still the open question.
