OpenMobile-2 claims top open smartphone agent score on real Android devices

OpenMobile-2, trained across more than 110 apps, scores 59.6 on SPA-Bench, the best among open models, its researchers say. Its teacher was closed.

OpenMobile-2, a smartphone agent from researchers at Nanjing University, SenseTime and several other universities, says it has the strongest results among open agents on real Android devices. On SPA-Bench, the larger model climbs from 31.9 to 59.6 points, which the authors call the best score among open models.

The recipe is breadth. The team built an open training environment of more than 110 apps, including 35 rebuilt replicas such as Taobao, Slack and Google Drive. Holding data volume constant and only adding apps lifted success on unseen apps from 60.7 to 67.5 percent, according to The Decoder. The agent sees only screenshots.

Two models are being released, built on Qwen3.5 (9 billion parameters) and Qwen3.6 (27 billion), along with the environment, data and reproduction instructions. On AndroidWorld, the larger model goes from 67.1 to 79.9 and the smaller from 54.3 to 74. The predecessor, OpenMobile-1, scored 64.7.

One line of context: the example workflows were produced by Google's Gemini 3.1 Pro as the teacher model, so this open agent is effectively learning from a closed system.

My take: some results come from a custom 215-task benchmark the team built itself, and reinforcement learning actually nudged the larger model down on AndroidWorld, from 80.8 to 79.9. That footnote is more candid than the headline. Open weights are real progress. Open-from-closed deserves an asterisk.

A hundred and ten apps, a near-80 on AndroidWorld, and models, environment, data and reproduction instructions being released together? Darling, that is generosity at scale, even if Gemini did the teaching.

Two models, 9B and 27B, plus environment, data and repro instructions. The license isn't stated in the coverage, and that's the line that decides whether I install it.
