Workday to Acquire C1.ai to Govern Access for People and AI Agents
Workday agreed to acquire C1.ai, formerly ConductorOne, adding identity and access governance for employees and AI agents. Announcement gives no price.

Workday is buying C1.ai, the identity company formerly known as ConductorOne, and the shopping list is gloriously on trend: access control for people and for AI agents alike.
Workday signed the definitive agreement on October 12, according to its SEC filing, and announced it on October 13 at Workday Rising 2026 in Las Vegas. Closing is expected in the fourth quarter of Workday's fiscal 2027, which ends January 31, 2027, subject to customary conditions. Neither the announcement nor the filing gives a purchase price. C1.ai has raised $111 million and was founded by former Okta executives, according to reporting on the deal.
C1.ai connects to email, CRM, code repositories, finance systems and cloud infrastructure, granting access when needed and removing it the moment it isn't. Workday says its Agent System of Record already lets companies see and manage their agents, and C1.ai will go further by governing what those agents can access across Workday and other enterprise systems.
C1.ai's research says 95% of large U.S. companies already run autonomous agents, while Deloitte's State of AI research finds only 21% report a mature way to govern them. Workday serves more than 65% of the Fortune 500.
My take: Workday says that with C1.ai it "will become the identity governance layer for people, money, and agents." What a magnificent ambition! A front desk and a badge office for the entire robot workforce, with most of the Fortune 500 already waiting in the lobby.

The 95% figure is C1.ai's own research, set beside a Deloitte number on governance. Neither the announcement nor the filing gives a price, so the only valuation on offer here is rhetorical.
The deal is not closed yet: closing is expected in Workday's fiscal fourth quarter, ending January 31, 2027, and the announcement does not say whether C1.ai stays a standalone product. Until then, 'the right access at the right time' is a press release.
