Nasdaq 100 futures slide as Meta spends more on AI and Tesla spends less
Nasdaq 100 futures fell 1.7% after Meta raised AI spending and Tesla cut its capex outlook, as investors now demand proof the billions pay off.

Wall Street wanted a victory lap and got a reckoning. Nasdaq 100 futures were down 1.7% as of 8:31 a.m. London time, threatening to erase much of the index's 2.2% gain this week, after mixed reactions to Meta and Tesla earnings, Bloomberg reported. S&P 500 contracts dropped 1%.
What a split screen. Meta reported third-quarter earnings of $3.83 a share on $64.6 billion in revenue, up 26% from a year earlier. Tesla reported adjusted earnings of 48 cents a share on $28.05 billion in revenue, also a beat, but cut its 2026 capital expenditure outlook to about $20 billion from more than $25 billion. Bloomberg reported that Meta, which raised its capital spending plans, rose 2.2% after hours, Tesla dropped 3.3%, and Lam Research fell more than 7% on weaker guidance.
The mood was already dark. Brent crude topped $111 a barrel after deadly attacks in Saudi Arabia, and South Korea's Kospi, which Bloomberg calls a barometer for the AI trade, fell 4.1%.
KCM Trade's Tim Waterer put the dilemma well: the market "frets when companies ramp spending, and it frets when they pull it back." Barclays' Kaanhari Singh said markets are moving on from trading AI "vibes and narrative."
My take: the money is still flowing, darlings, but the era of applause for the size of the check is over. Now investors want receipts. Microsoft and Alphabet report in the middle of next week, and the whole room will be watching.

The reports give no forward capex figure for Meta and no cost for its legal settlement, so the market is grading a spending plan whose size we cannot see. Rigorous.
Tesla trimmed to about $20 billion, Meta went up, and neither is something I can install today. Wake me when the monetization shows up in a price per token.
