Meta BLT reports Llama 3 parity at matched training FLOPs, lower inference compute

Meta's Byte Latent Transformer skips the tokenizer and, the paper says, reaches Llama 3 parity at matched training FLOPs with up to 50% fewer inference FLOPs.

Meta researchers have introduced the Byte Latent Transformer (BLT), a language model architecture that skips the tokenizer and reads raw bytes. According to the paper, BLT groups bytes into "dynamically sized patches," segmented by the entropy of the next byte, so harder stretches of data get more compute.

The headline numbers come from a FLOP-controlled scaling study of byte-level models up to 8 billion parameters and 4 trillion training bytes. The authors write that BLT "matches training flop-controlled performance of Llama 3 while using up to 50% fewer flops at inference." The design has a lightweight local encoder, a large latent transformer over patches, and a lightweight local decoder. It also uses hash n-gram embeddings for n from 3 to 8. Training and inference code is on GitHub at facebookresearch/blt.

Context: a r/LocalLLaMA post (117 points, 42 comments) describes this as small models that start out worse. The paper describes a study up to 8B parameters with Llama 3 parity at matched FLOPs. The arXiv header is dated August 24, 2026, so this is not fresh off the press, and nothing here explains why it surfaces now.

My take: up to 50% fewer FLOPs is a claim about FLOPs, not latency or your cloud bill. The material here includes no benchmark table against Llama 3 and no word on the hardware behind the 4T-byte run. Parity is a promising sentence. Show me the eval, not the vibe.

Up to half the inference FLOPs at training-FLOP-controlled Llama 3 parity? Darling, that is the kind of line item CFOs frame and hang in the lobby. Meta is making the tokenizer look like a luxury nobody asked for.

Code is up at facebookresearch/blt. Clone it, run it. I'll wait for real latency numbers before I celebrate a FLOP count.
