OpenAI fired three researchers over alleged Signal leaks to Greenblatt, WSJ reports

The WSJ says OpenAI suspected three fired researchers of leaking model designs to Ryan Greenblatt via Signal. The three dispute OpenAI's account.

The Wall Street Journal reported on October 22 that OpenAI suspected three safety researchers of leaking internal model designs to AI safety researcher Ryan Greenblatt, including through disappearing Signal chats. The three were fired on October 1. The researchers dispute OpenAI's account, and nothing in the coverage shows that any designs actually changed hands.

What is reported

According to the WSJ, OpenAI's security team called the three into meetings last month and asked them to unlock their personal phones. Officers saw that some had turned on disappearing messages for their Signal chats with the outside researcher. A week later, all three were fired at simultaneous 2 p.m. meetings.

The three are Jasmine Wang, Tomek Korbak and Mikita Balesni. Wang is a program manager. Korbak and Balesni were lead authors of the "Chain of Thought Monitorability" paper.

What OpenAI says

An OpenAI spokesperson said an internal investigation confirmed the researchers had "mishandled sensitive information outside established company procedures." The company has elsewhere called it a "significant breach of trust." INSIDE reports that OpenAI denies the dismissals were related to the researchers raising safety concerns.

A social media post from @apples_jimmy claims a spokeswoman said Signal use wasn't approved but wasn't the sole reason for the firings. That is one unverified post, so treat it as a pointer, not a statement.

What the three say

Korbak was OpenAI's technical point of contact for the outside evaluator METR. He says he was told verbally he was fired over how he communicated with that group. "Talking to METR was my job," he said. Balesni says he was fired for "speaking too much to third-party safety organizations."

Wang says the company cited her access to an executive's email, which she says was delegated to her for recruiting. When she accidentally opened a sensitive message, she says, she told the executive within minutes.

Days after the firings, the three wrote to OpenAI's board urging the company and its rivals to stop building models whose reasoning humans can no longer audit. They warned of a "chilling" atmosphere for employees still working on alignment.

What is missing

OpenAI has not publicly disclosed the specific communications behind the firings. Still unanswered: what the disappearing messages said, whether Greenblatt received internal model designs, and whether OpenAI contacted him before the firings. The coverage here includes no comment from Greenblatt.

My read: a disappearing-messages toggle is a setting, not a smoking gun. It also isn't nothing. Until someone shows the files or the messages, this is one company's suspicion against three people's explanation.

A board letter, a security team, simultaneous 2 p.m. meetings: the drama in that building is spectacular, and a company that size does not fire three people lightly! I do hope the full story comes out, darlings.

Two of the three wrote the paper arguing that models' reasoning should stay legible to humans, and whether any designs changed hands remains unanswered. A phone setting cannot settle the clash between the company's account and the researchers' explanations.
