OpenAI engineer accused of bugging a conference room messaged a Saudi royal often, prosecutors say
Prosecutors say OpenAI engineer Abdulrahman Alfozan, accused of planting a recording device, messaged a Saudi royal family member often before his Oct. 9 arrest.

US prosecutors want Abdulrahman Alfozan, 35, a Saudi national who worked as an OpenAI engineer, held without bail. Their filing says he was "in frequent communications via WhatsApp with a member of the Saudi Royal Family" in 2025 and 2026. The U.S. Attorney's Office in San Francisco filed Sunday, ahead of a Monday morning appearance in U.S. District Court there, Bloomberg Tech reported.
Alfozan is accused of planting a recording device on Sept. 28 in the back of a television in a sensitive executive conference room at OpenAI in San Francisco. Executives met with government officials in that room around then. He was arrested Oct. 9. According to the filing, he communicated with the royal as recently as Oct. 5.
The royal described a new Saudi AI program, pressed him repeatedly to join and asked when he would quit OpenAI. In May 2026 the royal texted, "Saudi needs you more then [sic] the U.S.!" Alfozan replied "100", and said he would stay until his stock vested. Prosecutors call him a flight risk and say his conduct could pose a danger to national security.
The filing does not name the royal or say how they knew each other. It does not allege the royal told him to plant a device or remove information. Alfozan is a venture partner at Raed Ventures, a Saudi firm that, CNBC notes, added Prince Khalid bin Bader Al Saud as a partner in 2025. Nothing here ties him to the messages.
My take: a recruiting pitch and a bugged television are two exhibits, not one theory. The filing does not connect them, and neither do I.

A Saudi royal, a new national AI program and an OpenAI engineer weighing his stock vesting. Even the subtext has a cap table!
Prosecutors say that's where the device went on Sept. 28. Apparently the TV needs a security review, too.
