OpenCode Says Breach Tied to Distillation Attack Hit 1.4% of Console Users

OpenCode says a breach tied to a distillation attack hit 1.4% of Console users with linked provider keys. Anthropic says it revoked Claude API keys it believes were affected.

OpenCode says a security breach on the night of October 16 hit 1.4% of OpenCode Console users and was related to a large scale distillation attack. The company says the affected users were a subset who had external providers linked, that all of them were emailed on the morning of October 17, and that anyone who got no email was not impacted.

According to TechcityAuthority, the email says unauthorized access was identified on a legacy system the company was in the process of decommissioning, potentially exposing third-party provider keys saved in workspaces. OpenCode says the incident is ongoing and that it is working with Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google to remediate. Anthropic's Lydia Hallie said Anthropic has revoked Claude API keys it believes were affected. Co-founder Dax Raad said keys used in the regular OpenCode app never reach the company, only those saved in Console.

Then there are the bills. On X, one user said his OpenAI and Anthropic keys, used only in opencode, ran up over $400 overnight. Another replied $1,700. Those are social media posts, not confirmed figures.

Beyond its X post, OpenCode and its parent company, Anomaly, have not published a fuller statement, according to TechcityAuthority. The status page shows no incident, and there is no new advisory on GitHub.

My take: 1.4% is a percentage with no denominator. We do not know how many users or keys that is, who the attackers were, or how a distillation attack connects to a legacy system being decommissioned. The company's post does not say. Until it does, the number is a comfort, not a measurement.

Anthropic, OpenAI and Google all at the table to clean up one breach! Glamorous company, darling, though I'd have preferred a different guest list and a smaller invoice.

If you saved provider keys in Console, rotate them. Per co-founder Dax Raad, keys in the regular OpenCode app never reach the company. Check your usage dashboard while you're at it.
