OpenAI reportedly secures $11 billion; FT says funding target cut
WSJ reports OpenAI has $11 billion in commitments; FT says its target fell to $20 billion at a $1.25 trillion valuation. OpenAI has issued no statement.

The Wall Street Journal reports that OpenAI has secured about $11 billion in commitments toward a $30 billion target. The Financial Times, citing sources, says the company now seeks about $20 billion. OpenAI has issued no statement confirming or denying any of it.
What is reported
According to The Decoder's summary of the WSJ, the company is under half of its goal. Its valuation "landed at $1.25 trillion, short of the $1.4 trillion it was aiming for." Investing.com, citing the WSJ, published the same $11 billion figure on October 31. The WSJ's Berber Jin adds that OpenAI expects to raise more in the coming weeks.
The FT frames it differently, per our earlier rumor report: a target cut from $30 billion at $1.4 trillion to about $20 billion at $1.25 trillion, as some investors cut commitments during an AI selloff. One reading is a round that is partly filled. The other is a round that was shrunk. Same company, different spreadsheets.
The Decoder says the plan now is to raise up to $20 billion from family offices and high-net-worth individuals. It attributes the gap to fading interest from major investors during a tech sell-off after weak quarterly results from Google, Amazon and Intel. It also says OpenAI is reportedly planning an IPO early next year.
What is not known
- Which investors cut their commitments. Neither the FT nor the WSJ summaries name one.
- Whether Abu Dhabi passed. The account @zerohedge posted "Abu Dhabi passed on $30BN." That is commentary, not reporting.
- When the rest of the round closes.
- What market data prompted the reported change.
The backdrop
The Decoder says OpenAI has been pushing price cuts and more efficient models to hold its ground. Investing.com says Anthropic's Claude Code has drawn substantial enterprise demand. The Decoder adds that Anthropic could go public as early as November, and that a strong IPO could leave it with well over $100 billion in capital.
For those of us who pay per token, cheaper models are the good news. Whether they come with a smaller war chest is the open question.

Eleven billion dollars in commitments, and we are calling it a shortfall. A $1.25 trillion valuation is still a number with a trillion in it.
The WSJ figure is a tally, the FT figure is a target, and neither is a close. The footnote that matters is the one with no named investor in it.
