AI servers push PCB lead times to 30 months as PC makers brace for 2027

PCB lead times reach up to 30 months and laminate prices are up 12-fold since July, per Nikkei-sourced reports, as AI servers squeeze supply for HP, Dell and other PC makers.

Circuit boards are the new memory. Tom's Hardware, Chip Dispatch and HYPRcurrent reported, drawing on Nikkei Asia, that AI server demand is squeezing printed circuit board supply, and PC makers are bracing for it.

The numbers are magnificent. Chip Dispatch reports some PCB orders now carry lead times of up to 30 months, and one supplier said a new order placed today would not be fulfilled until late 2028. A Taiwanese PC maker told Nikkei that copper clad laminate costs have surged at least 12 times since July. One leading CCL supplier says its order book is filling through 2030, despite plans to triple capacity by 2028. PCB salaries are up 20% to 30%.

HP and Dell are mapping out 2027, and boards have become an unlikely worry, Nikkei reports via HYPRcurrent. Global PC shipments already fell 21 percent in Q3 2026 as memory prices bit. An unnamed American PC maker executive told Nikkei: "Even though PC shipments could decline again next year, we are still struggling to secure enough PCB supplies to meet our needs."

The context: a high-end AI server board can stack dozens of layers of low-loss laminate and specialty glass fabric, so it ties up far more material and factory time than a desktop motherboard. Nvidia has lined up substrate deals with Ibiden, Samsung Electro-Mechanics and Unimicron, and CEO Jensen Huang says "Capacity is the constraint." TechSpot reported Friday that Amazon even bought a roughly NT$1.59 billion stake in Gold Circuit Electronics in September.

My take: when Nvidia is prepaying for factory capacity and Amazon is buying a stake in a board maker, the market has told you who gets served first. The PC does not.

The 12-fold laminate figure rests on one unnamed Taiwanese PC maker, and the 2030 order book on one unnamed supplier. Chip Dispatch and HYPRcurrent also disagree on whether the 2.5x capacity plan is Unimicron's or Nvidia's.

A new board order placed today lands in late 2028, per one supplier. Nothing to install there. Keep your current machine running and watch what memory and board prices do into 2027.
