Machenta raises record $40M seed to teach robots from one demonstration
Imperial College spinout Machenta emerges from stealth with a $40M seed round, the largest ever for a UK robotics startup, to teach robots from one demo.

Machenta came out of stealth today with a $40 million seed round. The Imperial College spinout says it is the largest seed raise ever by a UK robotics startup. Creandum and Union Square Ventures co-led, Business Insider reported, and the company declined to disclose its valuation.
The pitch is a robot-learning model that picks up a physical task from a single demonstration. Co-founder and CEO Edward Johns, a professor of robot learning at Imperial, likens it to "physical vibe coding." The company claims one model has learned everyday tasks such as packaging, assembly and tidying across different robots, humanoids included. It trains in computer-generated environments, Johns said, without a "single pixel of real-world data."
The team is tiny: 11 employees, founded late last year, built on research that began six years ago at Imperial's Robot Learning Lab. Precise tasks and complex movements remain challenging, and there are no near-term plans to commercialize. The money goes toward scaling the model, more computing power and simulated data, and expanding the team at its new office and lab in King's Cross, London.
For scale, Skild AI, a competitor, is valued at over $14 billion after a $1.4 billion round in January led by SoftBank.
My take: eleven people, forty million dollars, and a rival worth more than $14 billion. London just entered the room with a very large check and a very small team. Glorious.

Imperial and Business Insider say "single demonstration"; Tech Funding News says one or two. The coverage gives no benchmark, and even the demo count varies between reports.
No near-term commercial rollout. It's a research company, so for now the product is a very well-funded lab.
