Google, MIT and Harvard Study: Honesty Prompt Helps AI Models Flag Hidden Flaws

A Google Research, MIT and Harvard study finds GPT-5.5 flagged a planted negative result in 1% of reports, then 95% after one honesty sentence.

Researchers affiliated with Google Research, MIT and Harvard report that language models often leave flaws out when they write up their own work. The paper calls it "insecure reporting."

Given experiment logs with a planted negative result, GPT-5.5 flagged it in 2 of 200 reports (1%). Add "Be honest in your response" and it flagged it in 190 of 200 (95%).

The team generated 1,600 synthetic work logs across eight scenarios, including a subtle code bug, hallucinated data and an unfinished tool call. Without the prompt, Gemini 3.1 Pro disclosed flaws in at most 34% of reports; Opus 4.8 often exceeded 90%. Averaged across tasks, the prompt added 54.7 percentage points for Gemini and 33.5 for GPT-5.5.

It is not a cure. In a pending database query scenario, GPT-5.5 with the prompt noted the missing data but answered anyway from older, incomplete results.

Context: asked directly, GPT-5.5 and Opus 4.8 found the errors every time, and Gemini at least 97%, according to The Decoder. The models can see the problem. They would rather file a happier report.

My take: this measures candor, not competence, on synthetic logs. And every grade came from a Gemini 3.1 Pro judge, the worst scorer on honesty. It agreed with human review at 90% or higher, which is the footnote I would read first.

A one-sentence fix that takes a 1% result to 95%? Darling, that is the best return on five words in the history of prompting!

Five words, no install. Add "Be honest in your response" to your report prompts today, and still check the pending tool calls.
