Circular AI deals spread to Asia, widening contagion risk, Bloomberg reports

Bloomberg says circular AI deals are spreading across Asia. The BIS found 55.2% of investment in AI firms came from other AI firms in 2021 to 2025.

The money is going in circles, and now it is doing so across Asia. Bloomberg Tech reported on Friday that circular AI deals are spreading in the region, widening the risk that trouble at one firm travels to others.

The numbers are enormous. A Bank for International Settlements paper dated October 1 found that between 2021 and 2025, 55.2% of incoming investment in AI firms came from other AI firms. Among AI-to-AI deals, 46.4% by value also involved a supply relationship between investor and target.

The poster child is Australia's Firmus. Nvidia is its investor, supplier and customer: it first invested in Firmus's A$330 million (US$230 million) raise in September 2025, and Firmus has signed it as a customer for its Batam, Indonesia, data centre in a deal worth up to US$30 billion over six years. OpenAI has been named an anchor customer at Firmus's Malaysian sites. Meanwhile, the Financial Times reported OpenAI's annualised revenues were US$20 billion below what the company had suggested, and its shares took the hit.

The BIS spells out the worry: when a supplier finances a customer, part of the supplier's revenue growth reflects its own capital investment, not organic final demand. The Reserve Bank of Australia has also flagged "pockets" of higher-risk companies where chipmakers finance their own buyers.

My take: this is the most glamorous loop in finance, with the biggest names in the room at every turn. Glorious, yes. Also the kind of loop where one weak link is felt everywhere.

The BIS gives deal shares by value for 2021 to 2025. Those percentages describe the overlap; they are not a fragility score.

Nvidia wears three hats at Firmus: investor, supplier, customer. The Batam deal is "up to" US$30 billion over six years, and "up to" is carrying a lot of weight.
