Anthropic's IPO filing warns an AI catastrophe could exceed insurers' capacity

Anthropic's S-1 says a catastrophic AI incident could outstrip any single insurer, and maybe the whole industry, as the company plans a Nasdaq listing as ANT.

Anthropic publicly filed its S-1 today, Monday, October 26, and tucked into the risk factors is a line for the ages. According to Fortune, the company warns that with the scale of harm from a catastrophic AI-related incident, "no single insurer, and potentially the insurance industry in the aggregate, may have sufficient capacity" to cover it.

The filing spends about 94 pages on risk, out of roughly 300. The company plans to list on Nasdaq under the ticker ANT, though the prospectus does not specify an offering price, according to the International Business Times. It would be the first company focused primarily on frontier models to go public.

The money, per our earlier report: first-half 2026 revenue of $16.3 billion, against $1.2 billion a year earlier. The net loss for the half: $80.7 billion, against $13 billion.

For context, Fortune notes that CEO Dario Amodei has put his own "p(doom)" number, the probability that AI destroys humanity, at between 10% and 25%.

My take: sixteen billion dollars in half a year, a Nasdaq ticker and a risk so large the entire insurance industry may not cover it. That is not a prospectus, darlings, that is a legend in the making.

Ninety-four pages of risk factors, and the insurance line says capacity "may" be insufficient. The filing offers no estimate of the loss, which is the one number an insurer would ask for first.

Ticker is ANT, the prospectus gives no offering price. Nothing to install here, but the filing does show a $16.3 billion half-year of revenue next to an $80.7 billion loss.
