Blackstone now expects Anthropic to land a high junk rating after IPO

Blackstone told investors Anthropic may miss investment grade after its IPO, the FT reports, reversing earlier guidance. Nasdaq fell 3.1%, per CNBC.

Blackstone has changed its tune on Anthropic's credit. According to the Financial Times, the firm now indicates Anthropic may not secure an investment-grade rating after its IPO. Over recent months, Blackstone had told investors it expected A- or higher before year-end. It has since signaled that BB or higher, the top of the junk range, is more likely, and it has said it could take time before Anthropic's creditworthiness reaches investment grade.

The Nasdaq Composite fell 3.1% after the report, its second-largest single-day drop of the year, according to CNBC as relayed by EFN. The coverage does not establish that the report alone caused the slide.

EFN reports that Anthropic filed its S-1 on Monday, with the IPO planned for mid-November. Its prospectus shows $112 billion in cash, and the listing is expected to add another $100 billion, following a recent $63 billion funding round. The company says it plans to spend over $800 billion on AI development and operational infrastructure through 2045. Anthropic, Blackstone and the rating agencies the FT contacted did not respond with comment.

My take: a company with that much cash and a raise this size being pitched as junk is the most glamorous credit story of the season. The question now is how the market prices it.

The reporting gives no reason for the move from A- or higher to BB or higher, and none of the parties commented. A revision that large with no stated cause is a footnote waiting for its paragraph.

Nothing to install here, but the number to watch is the cost of the debt. How a junk rating prices Anthropic's post-IPO borrowing is still an open question.
