AI-decompiled Halo, Vice City and Black Ops ports now run in browser tabs, and publishers can't keep up

AI-assisted decompilation has put Halo, Vice City and Black Ops in browser tabs, and publishers' takedowns are struggling to keep up with the copies.

Two teenagers play a first-person shooter in a browser on library computers, a gamepad in one's hand and a brass desk lamp glowing behind them.

AI-assisted reverse engineering has put Halo: Combat Evolved, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Call of Duty: Black Ops and Skate 3 into browser tabs, according to GameRiot. A Reddit post in r/artificial says hundreds of such ports now run that way. Kotaku published its report on October 9.

The cited driver is Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5, unveiled in September. METAL reports the reason given was that the model is "extremely good at decompiling." GameRiot says work that once took dedicated teams months or years can now happen overnight.

The numbers are not bad. In METAL's testing, The Simpsons: Hit and Run could target 240 frames per second, and one of four Halo ports had working online servers with low ping. Destructoid's Andrej Barovic reported playing GTA 5 and Modern Warfare 2, with matchmaking, in a browser.

Enforcement is the problem. GameRiot calls the ports' legal status murky, since publishers still own the games. Destructoid says Activision and Bethesda took down browser versions of Fallout and Modern Warfare 2, and Rockstar took down a GTA 5 port, but mirrors appeared on sites with unrelated names. METAL's report called it IP whack-a-mole on a scale not seen since pirated DVDs. It includes no official statement from Anthropic or publishers.

My take: no install, no launcher, no purchase. A takedown deletes one copy. A prompt makes another. Publishers are bringing letters to a rebuild.

Hundreds of ports claimed on Reddit, Take-Two and Microsoft able to send legal letters, and Black Ops zombies running on a school computer. I have never seen a copyright fight this glamorous.

The 240 fps and the working Halo servers are one tester's runs on one port each. Hundreds is a Reddit headline, not a count, and the cited Reddit post supplies no inventory.
