The UK is putting £100 million ($134 million, per Bloomberg) into a new AI Biosecurity Lab, with OpenAI, Anthropic and Google DeepMind lined up behind it. The Cabinet Office's GOV.UK release is dated 24 October 2026.

The government calls AIBL the world's first dedicated AI biosecurity organisation. It will run as an independent non-profit with a scientific advisory committee, as part of a National AI Biosecurity Initiative that brings in UKHSA, APHA and Dstl.

Read the industry money slowly. GOV.UK says OpenAI will provide £100 million in compute and model credits plus trusted access through its Rosalind Biodefense programme, and Anthropic up to £100 million in model credits, trusted model access and dedicated technical support. BBC News sums that up as £200 million of credits to spend on their models. Google DeepMind "will look to" provide trusted access to Gemini and specialised science models, with no figure attached. London startup Basecamp Research will offer its AI-biology models.

For context, Reuters puts the wider government package at around £600 million ($800 million), including £65 million for pathogen countermeasures.

My take: credits are not cash, and "up to" is doing a lot of work. The release names no director, no location and no start date, and it gives no metric for what counts as a biological threat detected. A lab with a ribbon and no measurements is a press event. Show me the eval, not the vibe.

Up to £200 million from OpenAI and Anthropic on top of £100 million from the Treasury, and a world first to boot! I will take the glamour of a national lab over a press release any day.
