Tech selloff deepens: Amazon, Intel slide, Alphabet loses $500 billion
Global tech selloff deepens as Amazon and Intel tumble and Asia's Kospi sinks, with investors asking whether Big Tech's AI spending will pay off.

The global tech rout is now a full reckoning: where are the returns on all that AI money?
Amazon fell 7.3% in extended trading as spending soared and growth in its online business slowed, according to the Economic Times. Intel plunged 23% after hours on a revenue forecast that missed estimates. Alphabet fell 12.6% in regular trading and slid further after hours, wiping out $500 billion in market value as massive AI spending turned its cash flow negative.
Asia took the hit Friday. Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 2.6% to 62,960.60, according to AP. Lasertec dropped 13% and SoftBank Group slid more than 6%. South Korea's Kospi slumped 5%, taking its October loss past 17%, Reuters reported (the Economic Times had it above 3%). Nasdaq 100 futures were off 1.5%, the Economic Times said.
Pepperstone's Chris Weston put the mood plainly: "The market isn't necessarily questioning whether the AI buildout can be financed. It's increasingly questioning whether shareholders will earn an adequate return on the enormous capital being deployed."
The Economic Times offers one line of context: the damage has largely stayed in tech. More than 400 S&P 500 members advanced Thursday, and Microsoft drew blowout demand for a $25 billion debt offering.
My take: half a trillion dollars gone from a single company is a staggering number, even in reverse. The money is still flowing. It is the patience that is being repriced.

The Kospi is down more than 3% or around 5%, depending on which report you read. A $500 billion repricing deserves a hard look at the capex and cash-burn numbers, not just the headline.
Microsoft drew blowout demand for a $25 billion debt offering while Alphabet's cash flow went negative. Different companies, different receipts. Check the receipts before you buy the cloud bill.
