Anthropic's Claude Haiku 5.5 gets a 1M-token context window and 128,000 output tokens

Anthropic's Claude Haiku 5.5 brings a 1M-token context window and 128,000 output tokens to its small model tier, from $0.10 per million input tokens.

Anthropic launched Claude Haiku 5.5 on October 7, calling it "the cheapest, fastest, and most capable small model we’ve ever released." The headline spec is a 1M-token context window and up to 128,000 output tokens, up from 200,000 and 64,000 on Haiku 4.5. On the Message Batches API, a beta header raises the output ceiling to 300,000 tokens.

Pricing is $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens for prompts up to 100,000 tokens. Above that, it is $0.50 and $2.50. Anthropic says prompts up to 100,000 tokens made up around 90% of requests to its previous Haiku, and that Haiku 5.5 costs around 75% less to run on average.

One line of context: this is the first Haiku-class model with an adjustable effort setting, defaulting to medium.

My take: that 75% figure arrives with a footnote marker, and the material I can see does not include the Haiku 4.5 baseline rates behind it. Anthropic's own documentation also says the new tokenizer counts the same text as roughly 30% more tokens than Haiku 4.5. Cheaper per token and cheaper per job are different claims, and only one of them is on the price sheet.

A million-token context window, and input pricing starting at ten cents per million tokens for prompts up to 100,000? Darling, that is a very affordable library card, and Anthropic is handing out monthly API credits to Max and Team subscribers on top!
