AI Scam Economy Hits $442 Billion in Victim Losses, Bloomberg Reports
Bloomberg says AI is helping scam networks scale a $442 billion global fraud economy, as syndicates push beyond Asia into the Pacific and Africa.

Bloomberg reported Saturday that victims lost an estimated $442 billion to scams across 42 countries last year, citing Global Anti-Scam Alliance data. That is more than some valuations for the worldwide cocaine trade.
Some of the infrastructure comes free. A ZeroFox analysis for Bloomberg found phishing pages on the free tiers of nine developer platforms and AI app builders rose more than fourfold in two years, to 10,600. Nearly two-thirds of victims pay within 24 hours of first contact. INTERPOL's March assessment says AI-enhanced fraud can be 4.5 times more profitable than traditional methods. A February C4ADS and Associated Press investigation found compound tools such as KT Smart Translation, which bundles four AI translation services covering more than 100 languages.
The map is moving. UNODC warns that crackdowns are pushing syndicates toward weaker enforcement, including parts of the Pacific and Africa. Amnesty International counted 86 scam compounds in Cambodia as of April.
A footnote, because I enjoy them: PYMNTS headlined its own story "$422 Billion" while its body text says $442 billion. The larger figure is the one Bloomberg uses.
My take: "more than some valuations" of cocaine is a comparison of estimates against estimates. And the coverage gives no method for the 4.5x profitability figure. Treat the direction as credible and the decimals as décor.
