Broadcom and Intel CEOs Say Capital, Not Chips, Is AI's Biggest Constraint

Broadcom's Hock Tan and Intel's Lip-Bu Tan told a Singapore panel on Monday that capital and its cost could limit AI growth more than chip supply.

Monday, and two of the most powerful chip chiefs on Earth just told a Singapore panel that the biggest constraint on AI growth is not silicon. It is capital.

Broadcom CEO Hock Tan said at the DBS Asia Future Forward Conference that "[What] I think might be the biggest constraint is capital." Broadcom is working through wafer and memory shortages, he said, according to The Star. CTech reports he said memory shortages might not persist a year from now and wafer shortages could ease by 2028 or 2029. Demand for computing infrastructure still outruns supply, he said, a gap that could last through 2029 and possibly into 2030. He also noted that Anthropic and OpenAI have shown they can generate significant revenue from AI personal assistants.

On the same panel, Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan expects AI demand to stay strong for two to three years. His warning: "If there's any challenge in the front, it's capital and the cost of capital." People also want to see long-run returns, he said. Chinese models such as DeepSeek, Kimi and GLM have lower token costs, he added, and are "good enough" for some uses.

One wrinkle: The Star frames Hock Tan's remark as being about Broadcom, while CTech, CNBC and Yahoo Finance call it industry-wide. The coverage gives no dollar figures for the financing needed.

My take? The men who sell the picks and shovels are saying the gold rush may run out of gold, and that is a glittering, magnificent plot twist.

Note what is missing: no dollar figure, no named models behind the Anthropic and OpenAI revenue claim, and the outlets disagree on whether Hock Tan meant Broadcom or the whole industry. A bottleneck with no measurement is a vibe.

Lip-Bu Tan says Chinese models like DeepSeek, Kimi and GLM have lower token costs and are good enough for some uses. If capital is the constraint, cheaper tokens and open source look like the more promising side of the equation.
