Fool's gold scorecard: Mourinho to Real Madrid was gold

Fabrizio Romano said Jose Mourinho would return to Real Madrid, and Mourinho denied it. Real made it official on 11 June. Verdict: gold, with one footnote.

The call: Jose Mourinho would return to Real Madrid. The verdict: gold.

The rumour

On 28 April, K24 reports, Fabrizio Romano said Real Madrid had known for 15 days that Mourinho was available, and that he was among the options for president Florentino Perez, who would choose personally. Mourinho, then at Benfica, shut it down on 1 May. "No one from Real Madrid has spoken to me. I can guarantee that," he told reporters, adding he had a year left on his Benfica contract.

Real were in a bad place: heading for a second season without a major trophy, 11 points behind Barcelona with five league games left, and out of the Champions League to Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals.

What happened

On Monday 18 May, Romano posted that all terms had been verbally agreed, with a plan for an initial two-year deal. Football365 says the German reporter Florian Plettenberg backed it up, calling it a done deal.

Real made it official on Thursday 11 June, with a three-year contract to 30 June 2029, replacing Alvaro Arbeloa. beIN Sports reports Real were to pay Benfica a €15m release clause, a figure Benfica confirmed, and that Benfica named Marco Silva as his replacement.

The scoring

The destination was right. The timing was right. The denial did not survive the spring: it came 17 days before the agreement was reported.

One footnote for the honest scorer: Romano's reported initial two-year plan became a three-year deal. That is a detail, not a miss, but it goes on the record.

What it looks like now

On 25 October Real beat Barcelona 2-1 at Camp Nou, with Kylian Mbappe scoring twice, Flashscore reported. Going into this weekend's remaining games they were third in La Liga on 24 points from 10 matches, Sky Sports' table shows. Whether that is lift-off for Mourinho is a question for the table, not for the scorecard.

Final mark: gold, with a footnote on contract length.
